03Why Rwanda
Roughly a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas live in the Virunga Massif. Rwanda's side is the most accessible, and the trek starts two hours from the capital.
Lions returned to Akagera in 2015 and eastern black rhinos in 2017. It is one of the clearest conservation recoveries anywhere on the continent.
Nyungwe survived when most of Africa's forest did not. Thirteen primate species live in it, and a walkway runs through its canopy.
Rwanda is small. You can move between rainforest, savannah and a lake in a single week without internal flights or long transfers.
Lake Kivu has no crocodiles or hippos, sits between the northern and southern parks, and is where an itinerary gets its second wind.
Kigali is calm, clean and safe to walk. Roads are good. English and French are widely spoken. Very little about travelling here is difficult.

05The route
Most trips run in this order, because it is the sequence that keeps you out of the car.
01Arrive
Land, and start at the Genocide Memorial. It gives the rest of the trip its context, which is why it belongs at the beginning rather than squeezed in before a flight home.

The land opens out into savannah and the horizon comes back. Lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo, a boat safari among the hippos, and a night drive if you want one.

Where the itinerary finally breathes. No crocodiles, no hippos, so you can swim. Islands to boat out to, and fishermen who sing on the way home at dawn.

If ten days is not enough for your list, or your dates make a permit unlikely, we would rather say so before you book than after.
Someone who knows where the lions were yesterday, holds position for the light, and can read a forest changes the entire trip.
The same person throughout, in a private 4x4. By day four this matters far more than you would expect at the time of booking.
