01The place
Kigali is built over a set of hills, so the city keeps disappearing and reappearing as you drive through it. It is calm, notably clean, and easy to move around, and most visitors are surprised by how much they like it.
Nearly every Rwandan itinerary starts and ends here, which means it is usually treated as a transit night. That is a mistake. A day in Kigali gives the rest of the trip its context.
The Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi is the most important place to visit in the country. It is the burial site of more than 250,000 people, and it explains — carefully, and without flinching — what happened in 1994 and what came after. Allow at least half a day, and do it early in your trip rather than at the end.

The national memorial and burial place of more than 250,000 victims, with permanent exhibitions on the genocide against the Tutsi and on genocide elsewhere in the world.
Nyamirambo
The city's oldest quarter — mosques, tailors, barbers and street food, and the best walking tour in Kigali.
Kimironko Market
The largest market in the city. Produce on one side, and an entire hall of kitenge fabric with tailors who will make something up the same day.
Art studios
Kigali's galleries double as working studios, and the artists are usually there.

- Rain in Kigali tends to come in short heavy afternoon bursts rather than settling in for the day.
